About Fairmined

What is Fairmined?
Fairmined is a certification mark for the responsible and ethical origin of precious metals. What sets Fairmined apart from other initiatives aiming to guarantee or certify the origin of metals like gold is its rigorous control over certified metals. This is achieved through the registration and validation of each transaction, from the certified ASM mine to the licensed jeweler, all managed through a centralized control platform. This control philosophy prevents the Fairmined mark from being used as a form of Greenwashing. There are several reasons why you should consider being part of Fairmined, and you can find more details in this article.
Is Fairmined gold real gold?
Absolutely! Physically and chemically, Fairmined gold is the same as any other gold. What sets Fairmined gold apart is its rigorous traceability. The entire supply chain is identified and audited, and inventories are controlled through a centralized system. You can learn more about Fairmined in this article.
How can I provide jewelry that is Fairmined certified?
You can offer jewelry by becoming a Fairmined licensee. To become a licensee, you need to fulfill certain requirements outlined in this document. We also invite you to explore the rest of our FAQ to learn more about Fairmined.
Does becoming a Fairmined licensee have any costs?
Yes, you must pay an annual subscription fee of USD 75 to the ARM and simplified audit fees every three years amounting to USD 300. Licensees who consume more than 1,500 grams of gold or 20,000 grams of silver must undergo a complete audit every two years conducted by an external organization.
How do I record my transactions with Fairmined metals as a licensee?
You only need to validate purchases made by your Fairmined product provider on Fairmined Connect. Sales information for your jewelry and the metal used should be kept in your business records, to be presented only during the audit process, maintaining the confidentiality of your customers’ information.
Why should I enroll as a Fairmined licensee?
The Fairmined standard emphasizes the traceability of the metal. If the path of the metal from the certified mine to the final jewelry is unclear, there is no guarantee that it is indeed the same metal from the certified source. Consequently, all participants in the Fairmined initiative must be identified, every transaction must be documented and validated, and all must follow the practices outlined in the Fairmined Standard. Registering as a licensee helps track the final destination of Fairmined-certified metals and ensures the accuracy of the claims made to your customers.
Can I make purchases if I am not yet a Fairmined licensee?
Yes, by using certified Fairmined metals, you ensure that the raw materials you use are ethically sourced and traceable. However, as a non-active licensee, you will have restrictions on using the Fairmined mark and cannot promote your products as Fairmined certified. Sales made to you while not a licensee will be reported on Fairmined Connect as sales to non-licensees, concluding the traceability control.
How do I become a Fairmined licensee?
Contact ARM directly at info@fairmined.org or through their website chat. They will guide you through the process of becoming a licensee. More detailed information is available in this document.
Why can't I register as a Fairmined licensee on the Fairalloy website?
While we are an authorized Fairmined provider, the Standard is managed by the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), a nonprofit organization independent of the companies involved in the initiative. This organization administers the standard and regulates licensees.
Where do I pay the Fairmined premium for certified producers?
The price of the products we offer includes the payment of the Fairmined premium and the contribution for the administration of the organization.
How much Fairmined gold or silver must I use to sell a jewelry piece with the Fairmined label?
The entirety of the gold or silver in a gold jewelry piece must be Fairmined. There are exceptions, but they cannot exceed 15% of the total gold content in the jewelry. You can find more information in this document.
Some gold in my jewelry is not Fairmined. Can I still claim it is a Fairmined piece?
No, to promote your jewelry as Fairmined, it must meet the requirements for Fairmined Labeled. If it is not possible for the jewelry to be entirely made of Fairmined gold, you can consider implementing Fairmined Incorporated, which allows you to declare the use of Fairmined to stakeholders but not customers.
What is metal segregation, how does it work, and why should I apply it in my Fairmined jewelry production?
Metal segregation in Fairmined ensures that the buyer is guaranteed that the jewelry is made with ethical, sustainable, and traceable metals. Having processes that can guarantee segregation is crucial to offering Fairmined Labeled products. However, not all companies can ensure segregation integrity. In such cases, you can opt for Fairmined Incorporated.
